How to Recycle a Lead Battery
The battery gets shattered in a hammer mill, a machine that breaks storms into fragments.
The shattered battery bits get placed in a vat, with the lead and heavier components sinking to the bottom and the plastic rising to the top. The liquids get taken off, and the polypropylene fragments get scraped away, leaving the lead and heavy metals.
The bits of polypropylene is washed, blown dry, and transferred to a plastic recycler, where they get fused into an almost-liquid state. The molten plastic gets forced through an extruder, producing small, homogeneous plastic pellets. The pellets get sold to a battery case manufacturer, and the cycle begins again.
The lead grids, lead oxide, and other lead pieces are cleaned and then melted in smelting furnaces.
Ingot pans get filled with molten lead. Hogs are large ingots that weigh around 2,000 pounds. Pigs are smaller ingots that weigh 65 pounds. The impurities, also known as dross, float to the surface of the still-molten lead in the ingot castings after a few minutes.
When the nuggets are cold enough to handle, they are removed from the moulds and delivered to battery makers, where they are remelted and used to make fresh lead plates and other components for new batteries.

There are two techniques to deal with used battery acid.
Like baking soda, an industrial chemical gets used to neutralize the solution. As a result, the acid gets converted to water. It is treated, cleansed, and tested to ensure that the water meets clean water requirements. The wastewater accumulates and gets then discharged into the public sewer system.
Acid can also be processed and converted to sodium sulphate, an inconspicuous white powder used in laundry detergent, glass, and textile manufacturing. This method transforms a waste substance into a functional product. Acid can also be retrieved and utilized in new battery products through sophisticated recycling procedures.

If a lithium-ion battery gets recycled with lead batteries, it poses a high risk of fire and explosion. While storms may appear the same, it is critical to distinguish between lead and lithium-ion batteries.
BCI has developed a lithium battery training toolkit that can be included in organizations’ onboarding programs and learning management systems to reduce and eventually eliminate lithium batteries from the lead battery recycling stream (LMS).
