Using Natural Alternatives to Manage the Symptoms of HS

There are several options open to a person with HS, these are all ways to manage symptoms not get rid of it. There is nothing right now that can do that so be wary of promises of cures. These natural alternatives are an option for wound care to help reduce pain, inflammation and bring some relief.

Different people respond to different natural alternatives and how much better they feel also varies. When using supplements and essential oils keep in mind that they are not monitored by the FDA so be careful. Along with these options also take a look at what a Hidradenitis suppurativa diet might offer.

Warm compress options

Warm compresses are a good way to deal with afflicted areas as it helps with the swelling and the pain.

Apple cider vinegar

Some natural alternatives include using a small amount of ACV on a cotton pad (apple cider vinegar) and let it soak into the skin on the affected area. It can help fight the bacterial infection.

Turmeric with a carrier oil or honey

Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and is good for inflammation and preventing infection. Using a carrier oil such as coconut oil mix one tablespoon of turmeric with 1/2 tablespoon of oil and apply to the area for 15 minutes.

You can also use honey as that too has been used for many years for its healing, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Mix honey with turmeric and again apply for 15 to 20 minutes to the area affected then wash off.

Tea tree oil with a carrier oil

Tea tree oil is an old treatment for infections and inflammation. Use two tablespoons of carrier oil mixed with several drops of tea tree oil and apply.

Rubbing alcohol

When you are having problems with clogged pores you might want to clean with a cotton pad and some rubbing alcohol but it should not be used anywhere there is an open wound.

Aloe vera

Not just great for sunburn, aloe vera is also good for swelling and has antiseptic qualities. It is soothing and can help with the pain too. There is no need to mix it with anything but make sure you use one that is not scented and has no other additives. Apply directly to the area that is affected and leave to soak in.

Zinc supplements or cream

Zinc is another thing that helps reduce swelling. You can eat it in things like spinach or oysters, you can add supplements to your diet or you can make a cream to use directly onto your skin. Mix a tablespoon of beeswax with ½ cup of coconut oil and add 1 teaspoon of the zinc oxide powder.

Add more anti-inflammatory foods to your diet

As part of a balanced Hidradenitis suppurativa diet, it helps some people with HS to eat more foods that have anti-inflammatory properties. As well as cutting back on dairy, sugary foods and brewer’s yeast you could eat more cinnamon, oily fish, nuts, dark chocolate, fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, green teas sources of healthy fats.
