U.S. sent 300 trucks of heavy weapons, armoured vehicles to SDF – pro-gov’t daily

The United States has just sent 300 trucks filled with weapons and armoured vehicles to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is mostly comprised of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), pro-government Milliyet newspaper reported, citing SDF sources.

The United States conducted the shipments in secrecy in order to avoid backlash from Turkey, who designates the YPG a terrorist organisation and an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), an armed group that has been in war in Turkey for autonomy for over three decades, it said.

While the United States recognises the PKK as a terrorist organisation, U.S. troops have armed and trained YPG fighters who make up the bulk of the U.S.-backed SDF that has pushed Islamic State (ISIS) out of most of northern Syria.

Ankara has called on the Washington, which has sent a total of 6700 trucks with weapons and armored vehicles to the SDF to date, to stop the aid immediately, Milliyet said.

Turkey earlier this month announced that it would launch a large-scale operation against the YPG east of River Euphrates in Syria and began shelling YPG positions. The SDF, in response, called a temporary halt to its offensive against the remnants of ISIS in Syria.
