Smart STEM Toys for the Techie Kids in Your Life

We found over 12 math- and science-rich toys that tiny nerds can take apart, burn after which they can rebuild.
ANYONE who has seen a toddler meticulously taking off a drawer of Tupperware is aware that many kids naturally have a knack for engineering. Your job as parents is to foster their curiosity … as well as also, of course, clean up afterward. Between us the Product reviewer Scott Gilbertson and I have five children. It’s the most enjoyable aspect of my job – bringing my children to bring toys and myself to try out and then recommend to you. It’s not like work .
Make sure you have a few or these STEM toys (also known as STEAM toys We are too happy for you Arts!) and books for your upcoming scientist to explode, burn up, or tear down. It’s likely that they’ll be grateful for the early inspiration as they grow older. Endless Building Fun
Valtech Magna-Tiles
Every child I know is hooked on these products. It’s been quite a while. When he was 3 years old my son could play with these for long periods of time. Magna-Tiles that are transparent click together to form three-dimensional shapes as well as two-dimensional ones. Littler kids can build an entire house, complete with a backyard and fences, or even ice cones for ice cream. If you have an older child there is no limit. Or, at least, your credit card’s limit, because there are wheelbarrows stuffed with expansion sets you can purchase.
If they’re too costly you can find knockoffs that function equally well such as Picasso Tiles, which are just thirty dollars per 60-pieces. –Adrienne So

Lego Education’s Spike Prime building set is the complete robot-building school in a container. Literally. Prior to the dramatic increase in online learning this time last year Lego promoted this product mainly for schools. It includes it’s own lessons plans however don’t believe the hype–my children love this set and have gone from not having ever used it , to programming the robots of their choice (using the Drag-and-Drop Scratch programming language) within just a few hours.
Lego keeps updating Spike Prime too. Recently, it launched a new set of bots’ designs that monitor exercise and help youngsters understand the concept of the transfer of energy and motion. –Scott Gilbertson

- Chronicle Books’ gorgeous picture book is a story about Ken Nedimyer, an environmental scientist and live rock farmer and fish collector who established the Coral Restoration Foundation.
The book weaves together the details of Nedimyer’s life with information regarding coral reefs – I didn’t realize that corals reproduce as fish do, and beautiful underwater scenes and descriptions of diving. It makes environmental conservation and pursuing your passions like a breeze and is fun. –Adrienne So

Unlock the Rocks
Rock Tumbler
The best toys are ones that aren’t really toys in the first place. In the past year, my kids have been captivated by Geology and fossils. We’ve taken walks in the woods or on the beach, and have been putting interesting specimens in our pockets. We’ve often kept the tumbler in operation for several weeks (outside as it can be quite loud) switching out the grit, and then watching as the rough rubble appears as sparkling quartz or Agate. If you’re feeling adventurous then you could also put into a rock guidebook and arrange a rock-hunting excursion once traveling becomes more comfortable. –Adrienne So

- Polymer Clay
A big part of experiencing the world is experiencing the world, digging into the dirt, like a child however in the event that you don’t own a yard or live close to an area with a park, you could bring that same excitement inside by using polymer clay.
It’s the mold-andbake type of clay you used as a child. It’s just got a new name. Things your children make may not last forever and last, but it’s an opportunity to learn. After the table of her doll broke repeatedly she asked me whether I could strengthen the legs using wire.
