Turkish pro-government media avoid royal meeting pictures
Turkey’s pro-government media is avoiding using pictures of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan bowing down before Queen Elizabeth II, opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet said.
The media chose to avoid printing the pictures, which show Erdoğan visiting Buckingham Palace on a recent visit to London, in favour of others showing Erdoğan’s wife Emine Erdoğan with the Queen.
It is unknown why the picture found no favour, but it may either be in order to avoid the image of Turkey’s head of state bowing down to another world leader, or else, as some Twitter wags have suggested, to avoid parallels being drawn with a painting in the backdrop of the picture showing a horse being patted by its owner.
Erdoğan is currently in a high-stakes election campaign, with the polls due on June 24. The winner of the presidential elections will gain a bevy of new powers introduced with a constitutional change in 2017.
