The Australian Government issued in the week (10/17/2020) an official statement on the visa situation for international students. This is great news, especially at a time when the country is resuming its routine, after the restriction measures adopted due to COVID-19.
In the statement, the Prime Minister of Australia makes it clear that the country intends to remain one of the main options for exchange students who want to study and work abroad. Therefore, to ensure that international students are not affected by the corona virus pandemic, the Australian government promises some changes to visa conditions.
The main changes are:
WHO ALREADY APPLIED FOR THE VISA AND HAS NOT RECEIVED ANSWER:
Immigration will re-evaluate and approve visa applications for students outside of Australia. So as soon as the country’s borders are reopened, students will already have their visa ready to travel to Australia.
No further details have been released on how and when visa processing will resume, but we will be vigilant and ready as soon as activities at the Embassy resume.
FOR THOSE WHO HAS THE APPROVED VISA, BUT CANNOT TRAVEL:
International students who had already received a positive response to their visa application and who were unable to start or complete their studies due to the closure of the country’s borders (or other measures taken to contain the coronavirus), can apply again for free. That is, if you already had the visa and were unable to board, you can apply for a new “corrected” visa at no additional charge.
In update on 08/04/2020, on the official Australian website, the Australian government informs that new applications can be made from 08/05/2020. You must attach a specific form, to be signed by your school abroad. If you are a student, don’t worry, we will do it for you.

The Australian government will not provide refunds to any student who has already applied for a visa, but anyone affected by the pandemic will be able to use the new free app. Also, it is important to note that the visa processing time is longer than usual.
It is attentive to deadlines and will make sure that visa applications are made at the correct times, so if you are our student: don’t worry, we will get in touch with you!
Students want to study here and we want to receive them in a safe and controlled way, when it is safe to do so. ”
This statement is very important so that exchange students who are in Australia, or who have had their trip postponed due to the pandemic, have the confidence that the Australian government will help international students.
REOPENING OF BORDERS:
The country is a world benchmark in the fight against COVID-19 and has resumed its economic activities over the weeks. However, Australia’s borders remain closed. Based on our experience with the country, its link with international students, daily contact with schools, and knowledge of visa applications, we estimate that shipments should resume from early 2021.
